Afghanistan Threatens to Respond to Alleged Airstrike by Pakistan: What Might the Taliban Government’s Response Be?

Wednesday morning began with a threat from Afghanistan to respond to Pakistan’s alleged airstrike, increasing the already existing tension between the two countries.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense issued a statement accusing Pakistan’s military of violating Afghan airspace and bombing a refugee camp in the Paktika province’s Bermal district, which resulted in several deaths and injuries.

However, the Pakistani military’s media wing, ISPR, and Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have neither confirmed nor denied the attack.

On Wednesday morning, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense posted three tweets about the alleged attack on its official X account, which were also retweeted by the spokespersons of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense, Inayatullah Khwarazmi, and the central spokesperson of the Taliban government, Zabihullah Mujahid.

The Afghan Ministry of Defense also claimed that most of the people killed or injured in the attack were refugees from Waziristan, including women and children.

The statement read: “Afghanistan condemns this attack and considers it an act of aggression and against international norms. Pakistan should understand that such actions will not solve the issue.”

The Ministry of Defense further stated that Afghanistan views defending its territory as an inalienable right and would respond to this “cowardly act.”

In the afternoon, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires and handed over a strong protest note regarding the alleged bombing by Pakistani military aircraft in Afghanistan’s Paktika province.

The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated on social media that such “irresponsible actions will certainly have consequences.”
